During early 1941all Mauser produced pistols were required by the Heereswaffenamt to change from the four digit date to a two digit date so the "41" began to two digit series which was to take effect January 1st, 1941. A second directive was made to place the P.08 on the left side of the frame and the P-38 was also ordered to mark the P.38 was production of the P-38 was beginning.

The serial number range was reported to be 1869n to 4860 (no suffix) with an estimated army (Heer) production of 11,8881.  There was an additional requirement for Mauser to change from from the two digit (42) code to a three letter code (byf) with this order also to occur on January 1st 1941.  While the two digit date and P.08 appeared on schedule for some reason there was a delay in converting to the "byf" code.

It is entirely subjective to give any Luger a rating of excellent or fine, just as it is to declare it xx% blued or strawed. Few Lugers are out of the box new and these are premium priced. Bluing percentages is like Beauty, in the eye of the beholder.   We strive to provide pictures so you can judge for yourself if the gun meets your criteria.

Mauser had an overrun of approximately 16,000 units and this accommodated the delay in the conversion to the "byf" code and created the rarity for the collectors today.  Everyone seeks a 41/42 for their collection because of the minimal production of this gun.

Questions to Josef@phoenixinvestmentarms.com

The inside of the gun is clean and reflects the effort for cleaning the past 40 years. Lugers that are stored for any period of time should have the wooden grips at least waxed on the inside to protect contact with the metal. The barrel is strong and shiny. This Luger has all matching numbers. The finish is nicely blued with honest holster wear on the end of the barrel and side plate. This Luger has a hold open latch and stock lug.
This is an all matching gun with the serial number and gauge markings on the barrel and the "n" suffix on the receiver.  The "n" suffix tells us this was early in the production of the 1941 year which was during the transition to the "byf" code but still within the "42" series.  Another indication of the transition is the change in number punches with the barrel and magazine having a flat top "3" and the frame the round top.

There is the "V" rear sight on the rear toggle link and the last two digits of the serial number appear.   This is a basic collector gun, everyone has one in their collection.  The extractor is marked "GELADEN". The bore is good with distinctive lands and groove.  The thumb safety is new style, and blued. The thumb safety is marked 'Gesichert' and safe is down.

The number of proofs and serial numbers appear just about everywhere on the Luger. Beginning in 1940 the Straight Wing Eagle 655 proof was the stamp of Technische Oberinspektor Gerbig inspected approximately 450 pistols a day. The quality and finish reflects the craftsmanship of Mauser who absorbed many of the DWM machinists.

In 1941 C.G. Haenel changed their code from 122  which began in 1940 to supply the Mauser magazines known to collectors as Type III to "fxo" magazines. These "fxo" magazines did not appear until February of 1941.  The "122"  magazine and "n" suffix correspond to the early 1941 Parabellums when all the changes had not occured.

Serial number placement is in the military ("exposed") style.   The serial number appears on the front of the frame, on the side of the locking bolt, on the trigger, on the bottom of the barrel, the side plate,  the left side of the receiver, the safety bar, the sear bar, the rear connecting pin, and on the extractor.

The is an excellent example of the hard to find 41/42  Mauser Parabellum built under the short period of transition to the "41"/byf code Mauser.  A collectors dream in excellent condition. We reserve the right to sell any internet offering to a direct sale and do not warrant the availability of any firearm that do not have a cash deposit. Any questions to josef@phoenixinvestmentarms.com . This 1941 Luger is offered, over-the-counter for $2,995.00.
