This is a 1934 Pistole 08 military Parabellum
manufactured by Mauser. As a K-Date this is one of first
military contract Lugers produced by Mauser. This Luger is a 4 inch
(100mm), 9mm Parabellum. To conceal production a series of
alphabetical dates were assigned in addition to the code on the
toggle S/42 (Mauser). ''K" dates are representative of the
Lugers produced in 1934; this is an all-matching gun including two
magazines and a serial numbered holster along with a cleaning rod
and loading tool. (1825 |
NOTE: Photographs taken today with the high mega-pixel camera show more than we sometimes can see with the human eye. Magnified close-ups show us tool marks and natural surface conditions that one normally doesn't see in the ordinary handling of the weapon. Mauser-Werke and Berliner-Karlsruher Industrie-Werke (BKIW), [BKIW was the successor to DWM (Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken)] and had common ownership. In 1930 the machinery, technicians and supplies were moved from Berlin-Wittenau to Oberndorf and BKIW's interest in the Parabellum ceased. In 1934, Mauser obtained its first contract for 10,930 with the K-Date over the chamber. For the collector there are four variations of the K-Date. |
The thumb safety is new style, and strawed. The finish is 98% blued and 98% straw blued and has a hold open latch and stock lug. This Luger has all matching numbers including the magazine. The gun has a numbered hold-open. There is no 2mm "hump" at the rear of the receiver indicating this was a DWM frame that was inherited by Mauser with the transfer of assets from Berlin.
This
is a standard 1934 Model gun designated by collectors as the Version 1 "K" Date
Mauser.
The first toggle link is marked
with the Scriptic S/42 Mauser code. There is the "V" rear sight on the rear
toggle link and the last two digits of the serial number appear. |
|
The underside of the barrel bears the early Scriptic "S along with the serial number and the gauge marking (distance between lands at construction). You can also see the witness mark struck at the time of the orginal barrel alignment.
The
Scriptic "S" on the bottom of the thumb safety and the serial number is on top. |
|
This K-Date (1934) rig in addition to representing the first of the Nazi era contract guns for the Wehrmacht is an early serial number Scriptic "S" version. The 1934 holster has the WWI Veterans Pin and comes with a proofed loading tool and a brass tipped early cleaning rod. The Parabellum is all matching with two matching magazines and represents one of the best "K" Dates that we have seen. |
|
The barrel is
matched to the gun with the gauge
8.83mm
stamped representing the distance of the lands. The 1448 serial puts this K-Date early in the
1st variation of the
K-Dates. Here we have a K-Date 1448th production piece with
the "Scriptic "S". Note the early Mauser Ö][37 proof
on the magazine, the Ö][37 on the bottom of the magazine is a very rare and hard to find original magazine in the early series. |
|
Above: Easy to see the Ö][37 proof on the barrel, the 3 digit serial number on the receiver and the Scriptic "S" on the sear plus the last two digits of the serial number also on the rear main axel pin. |
|
Note the "48" (last two digits of the serial number on the breach block and the drooped wing acceptance proof eagle. Below is the "S" on the breach block right side. |
|
Above Left: The serial number is on the firing pin along with Scriptic "S" which also appears on the firing pin retainer. Above Right: With the gun in full recoil it become obvious that the Mauser produced 2mm addition by the rear main axel pin is not there giving us positive indication (along with the milling of the stock attachment) that this was a DWM frame that came to Mauser in the early 1930's. Below Right: The extractor is shown in the 'up' position indicating that the gun is loaded (GELADEN). This gives the shooter notice both visually and tactilely that the gun is loaded. |

Der Deutsche Soldat mit dem Parabellum (The German soldier with the Parabellum) |
Included in this offering is an all matching early K-Date with the
Scriptic "S" proof on all the major parts, two matching magazines, a proofed loading tool, a proofed cleaning rod in a 1934 proofed
& numbered holster with the cleaning rod
pouch. One of the most complete & minty K-Date rigs we have ever
seen. |
|
Here you can see the tab over the loading
tool and the cleaning rod that secures them in the pouch. |
|
The belt loops are securely attached to the holster and the cover is fulling functional. The pull strap is in good condition and the top has the emblem of the German veterans award |
|
The 1934 was the only issued holster in the Wehrmacht that contained the cleaning rod and a loading tool. Usually the cleaning rods were issued in multiples as part of the unit armorers tool kit.
The Nazi WWI Veterans pin recognized those fighters who had served honorably during WWI and had enlisted to join the Wehrmacht and continue to serve into WWII. If you were 20 yrs old in 1918 when WWI ended and you were still able in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland you were now 38. This was a masterful way or retaining the experience of those who fought in the 1st World War. |
|
Inside the side plate we see a commercial proof which again tells us that these guns were made from existing stock. The Loading tool is proofed with the Ö][37, really a hard tool to find.
The manufacturers
cartouche is clearly stamped with the 1934 matching date. |
Der Deutsche Soldat mit dem Parabellum (The German soldier with the Parabellum) |
The above picture shows
the Parabellum in full recoil and the side plate and grip removed.
One can see the insides reflect the care and maintenance this 82 yr
old battlefield favorite deserves. The barrel is strong with
distinctive lands and grooves. At the rear of the gun you can see
the numbering of the rear main axel pin (see Right Below). In 1932 the Reichswehrministerium
issued an order that the rear main axel pin be serial numbered
to the gun. You can also see a fine examples of the
fire-blued pins. The last two digits of the serial number are evidenced on the trigger, inside the right grip and sear. |
|
Much like in the tradition of the Erfurt Royal Arsenal the initial K-Dates had the Scriptic S on the grip screws. Some say this was the result of Erfurt craftsman being transferred to Mauser. No reference is ever given to that story. Above Right one can see the "S" on the sear and the "48" on the sear stop. |
|
There appears to be a hardness punch on the left side of the receiver along with a small "a"; we haven't seen this application of a suffix on the side of a Parabellum. Also revealed is the last two numbers of the serial on the locking lever, the trigger, and the side plate.
The Scriptic "S" appears on the the firing pin, and the firing pin retainer
The underside of the front of the frame. Above right we can see that this frame has the thick edging around the ramps at the rear of the frame and the lack of the Mauser frames which added a 2mm "ear" around the rear by the rear main axel pin. These early Parabellums including the "v" series guns used up the parts purchased from DWM in the transfer from Berlin.
Der Deutsche Soldat mit dem Parabellum (The German soldier with the Parabellum) |
The four digit serial number puts this Parabellum into the Version II of the K-Date collector designations with the introduction of the Gothic "S" on some of the parts. It is still a mixture because we have the early Ö][37 proofs throughout the gun. |
|
The right side of the receiver shows us the Gothic "S" and more Ö][37 proofs. Adjacent to those is the drooped winged eagle (Adler) of the German Waffenam (War Weapons Office). |
