This is a 42 (1942) Chamber dated Mauser byf built for the German Schutzstaffel SS after the contract for the P-38 was in production. The SS had their own procurement system. This Parabellum is 9mm with a 4" (100mm) barrel that is proofed and serial numbered to the gun. Serial number placement is in the military ("exposed") style. The thumb safety is marked "Gesichert" and extractor "Geladen." This example has all matching numbers. This is a full rig, an all matching 42 Mauser byf with a correct black magazine, a 1942 dated holster, an extra FXO magazine, a loading tool, a chest strap, a period belt and a SS Belt buckle (My Honor is Loyalty) of the Schutzstaffel, with the SS runes stamped inside. This was a battlefield pickup in France and passed down to the family. Not much information was available from the grandfather except he was in Northern France during the war. The belt and buckle are not dated so it was probably a latter war issue as the gun is a 1942 Parabellum and that was at the end of production for Mauser. |

There is a "42" dated Mauser Code byf on the first toggle link with a "V" notch rear sight. The pistol shows the honest wear of war with shiny points at the high ridges where it comes in contact with the holster. Featuring a 100mm (4" barrel) and the Mauser manufactured "hump" at the rear of the frame this is the classic Model 1934 as manufactured for German Military Acceptance as witnessed by the various Eagle 135 Waffen Amt proofs and Nazi Eagle on the barrel. |

These Lugers by Mauser were marked in the military manner with exposed serial numbers on all the parts. In early 1941 the dates were changed to two digits and the P.08 was added on the frame. There were both wood grips and plastic grips due to the shortage of walnut wood grips. The black plastic grips and magazine give it the Black Widow designation. |

Here we can see the early Mauser Eagle 135 proofs with the straight wings and the late Waffenamt (Ordinance) Eagle /Swastika acceptance stamp.
This Swastika was what gave collectors the sense they were the "true" Nazi guns but any of the Lugers picked up during WWII were Nazi used. |

This Luger has been cared for over 72 years now. It is looking for a good home. This is a very clean gun with an excellent barrel and all matching including the magazine. Below: Note the last two digits of the serial number on the rear main axel pin. In 1932 the Reichswehrministerium issued an order that the rear connecting pin be serial numbered to the gun. You can also see a fine examples of the fire-blued pin. (Below) you can see the craftsmanship present in the machined parts, all serial number, all matching. |

The skull and crossbones is an ancient symbol that was first adopted by the Hussars Calvary and then modified by the Imperial Army for the formation of the The Stormtroopers (in German Stoßtruppen, "shock troops") were specialist military troops which were formed in the last years of World War I as the German army developed new methods of attacking enemy trenches, called "infiltration tactics". The Totenkopf was used in Germany throughout the inter-war period, most prominently by the Freikorps. In 1933, it was in use by the regimental staff and the 1st, 5th, and 11th squadrons of the Reichswehr's 5th Cavalry Regiment as a continuation of a tradition from the Kaiserreich. It was then adopted by the SS (Schutzstaffel). The pin on the holster is from the collar tab of an SS Mann. |

The Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) founded in September 1933 was Adolf Hitler's personal Bodyguard Regiment ("Leibstandarte" ) being a somewhat archaic German expression for the personal bodyguard of a military leader). |

The term SturmAbteilung originally came from the specialized assault troops used by Germany in 1918 in World War I. Instead of a large mass assault, the SturmAbteilung were organized into small teams of a few soldiers each. Under their popular leader Ernst , the SA grew in importance within the Nazi power structure, eventually claiming thousands of members. Eventually Röhm grew too powerful and was imprisoned and latter killed by the SS. The SS was formed initially as personal guards for Hilter during the rallies and travels and was soon assimilated by Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler's as the SS organization, through the SS Führungshauptamt, literally The SS Guidance Principal Office. In the early years, membership was open to true "Aryans" only in accordance with the racial policies of the Nazi state.

| The low two digit number is an oddity one seldom sees; the FXO magazine was late war extruded metal with the plastic base, a great match to the grips to give this Luger the distinctive look. So came the Black Widow. | |
